A TELEVISION FORMAT
Title:
“Profit by the News”
Second edition
By Stig Nordskilde
Introduction to the Format
A format for a TV game show based on current events shown on television news broadcasts and with a possibility of the interactive participation of the viewers and the viewers’ purchase of goods or services from advertisers in TV commercials for rates of discount (percentage points) or discount amounts, which all viewers may earn during the broadcast. The format can be used interactively, both by TV channels which transmit through terrestrial transmitters, through satellite, through cable, through internet and through mobile or if any by simultaneous broadcastet TV and IP-TV in a Picture in Picture (the interactive functions) on the same screen. The viewers, however, are to be identifiable with a view to name and address or a code-number via a response server. If necessary an identification code-number may be informed each viewer on his screen at the beginning of the game show.
The issue is a semi real-time television which attaches to events taking place approximately 2-5 days before and which have been mentioned in the TV channel’s news broadcasts and which are still in the awareness of the viewers.
The format is suitable for motivating the viewers to see the next “Profit by the News” broadcast with the possibilities provided for sales of commercial breaks for the TV channel and for sales of goods and services.
The format is suitable to make the viewers stay on the TV channel and not zap on to other TV channels or surf further on the Internet.
Nor is there any motivation to promote irrelevant streaming on the TV screen. The viewers may react interactively in relation to what is happening on the TV screen and not react interactively with other viewers or media.
The format is, in contrast to marketing and sale through text-TV or through ordinary e-commerce, time-related (to news broadcasts), the reason why marketing and sales can be controlled pertaining to time in relation to viewers. Hereby, the number of potential buyers may be calculated more precisely, and cost/benefit with a view to commercial features and discounts and sales of goods and services in connection with the broadcasts, and stock in trade can be calculated more precisely.
The “Profit by the News” broadcast consist of a game show of approximately 24 minutes plus three commercial breaks of approximately 3 minutes each, just before the broadcast, in the middle of the broadcast and in connection with the ending of the broadcast, respectively.
The first commercial break includes commercials for “The Advertiser,” whose goods and services, when bought just after the broadcast and in subsequent broadcasts, if any, you can earn rates of discount or discount amounts to buy. During the commercial feature reference should be made directly to the fact that rates of discount or discount amounts can be earned during the “Profit by the News” broadcast. The prices of the goods or services are pre-advertised in the commercial.
The supplier of goods or services, for the purchase of which you can earn rates of discount or discount amounts, shall hereinafter be referred to as “The Advertiser”.
Commercial features from other advertisers may appear in the three commercial breaks. In the commercial feature in the middle of the broadcast “The Advertiser” whets the interest of earning rates of discount or discount amounts and use these for purchases. In the last commercial feature in connection with the ending of the broadcast the viewers are provided with the possibility of ordering goods or services for the earned rates of discount or discount amounts simultaneous with advertising for “The Advertisers” goods or services.

Set Design
The Anchor and The Commentator are behind desks as in a real TV-news studio.
Behind the desks there is a video insert to show “The Chosen Person of the Day” and a very big screen with changeable background.
The desks must appear to look like they have been made by redwood and the colours must be moderate, so that an impression of quality, honesty and seriousness is given.
The Game
This is about a TV viewer competition relating to news broadcasts transmitted on the TV channel.
The Anchor is supervisor of the performance of the competition taking place in stereotype-structured sequences, which the viewers recognize. Only some of the known sequences are carried out in each individual broadcast.
The Commentator assists the Anchor.
The viewers get 30 seconds to answer each question, cf. below. During the reply time a question mark is shown on the screen. In the meantime the broadcast is continued in general.
The “Voice Over” Sequence
A video relating to a feature in a news broadcast, which has been shown on the TV channel is repeated with two different comments (voice over) from The Commentator. One contains truthful information. The other contains considerably false information. After the true and the false video version having been shown The Anchor asks whether video no. 1 or video no. 2 is true. The viewers are encouraged by the Anchor to choose the “one” or “two” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces the right answer. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount (percentage points) or “The Amount of the Day” (a discount amount, read "Awarding Prizes to the TV Viewers").
The “True or False” Sequence
The Anchor gives the floor to The Commentator who gives his comments to one of the events of the day. All of a sudden, the Anchor stops and asks whether The Commentator’s last comment is true or false. The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to choose “yes” or “no” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces the right answer. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The “Viewer Survey” Sequence
The Anchor asks whether the viewers agree to a statement given in a comment or in an interview in a video from a news broadcast, which has been transmitted on the TV channel. The video is repeated. The Anchor encourages the viewers to decide whether they agree or not and therefore choose the “yes” or “no” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces how many percentages were for or against the view and thus, whether the ones choosing “yes” or “no” having the right answer. The highest percentage is the right answer. The response server calculates the percentage. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The “Small Talk” Sequence
A video is shown from one of the recent days’ news broadcasts on the TV channel with prominent persons who are received in an airport, who have political negotiations or who talk from a rostrum etc.
The Commentator records voices synchronously with the prominent persons moving their mouths on the silent video.
What is said is to be a charade. It is repeated in two versions. The viewers are to vote on which version they think is the funniest. The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to choose the “one” or “two” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces which version got the most votes. Viewers who chose this earn 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”. The response server calculates the votes.
The “On Location” Sequence
The Commentator is in a public available place in the TV channel’s transmission area. The Anchor in the studio asks a difficult question on fingertip knowledge in relation to a piece of news shown in a news broadcast on the TV channel. The Commentator must get the right answer. He knows the question and the right answer but may not himself answer the question and therefore, he must acquire help from one of the persons present in order to get the answer.
The Anchor asks the question just before the location with The Commentator is shown, and the viewers then have 30 seconds to guess whether The Commentator will be capable of giving the right answer of the day in the course of 5 minutes. The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to choose the “yes” or “no” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. In the meantime the broadcast continues with other sequences and The Commentator on location is shown again after the five minutes have lapsed.
Persons in the vicinity of the recorded location who recognize The Commentator (with camera man etc.) must hurry to help The Commentator. The Commentator asks the question to the first person approaching him.
If the answer is not right, The Commentator will say this to the person in question and this person will not get any further chances. Therefore, The Commentator asks the question to others on the location until the right answer has been given, or the five minutes are up. The Commentator can, if any, walk around on location e.g. in a fast food restaurant or at a gas station or in a shopping centre and ask the question to persons there.
The Anchor establishes whether the right answer has been given in a timely manner. The right answer to this from the viewers will give 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The first person helping The Commentator to the right answer within the time-limit will get a prize from The Commentator. This will at the same time have the effect of advertising for the goods or services which “The Advertiser” sells. The presentation is shown in the broadcast.
The recording itself of the “On location” sequence may take place before the broadcast is transmitted, as the real-time experience only has relation to persons on the same place as The Commentator.
The “Factual Knowledge” Sequence
The Anchor asks an open question in relation to a news broadcast, which has been shown on the TV channel. Brief answers are shown in a panel on the TV screen of which only one is correct. The viewers are encouraged by the Anchor to choose the right answer on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces the right answer. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The “How did it go” Sequence
A video is shown from a news broadcast, which has been shown on the TV channel. The Anchor asks e.g. whether the robbers are caught, whether the President resigned, or the company has gone bankrupt. The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to choose the “yes” or “no” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces the right answer. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The “Who is it” Sequence
A person who has been mentioned or shown on a video in a news broadcast on the TV channel is shown in a computer-manipulated photo with false hair, false beard, false eye colour etc. The viewers are to guess who it is. Three names are shown in a panel on the TV screen. The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to choose one of the names by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces the right answer. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The “Sports Result” Sequence
A brief feature is shown from a sport event in a group sport, which has taken place some days before. The feature should include events indicating a result, e.g. scores or scenes of joy. Three possible results of the sport event are shown in a panel on the screen. The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to choose the right result by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces the right answer. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The “False Voice” Sequence
A telephone on The Commentator’s desk in the studio is ringing. The Commentator takes the phone and greats with the name of the person calling. Then the sound is connected so that the viewers can hear what The Commentator and the person calling are saying.
Then a conversation spins out with a politician on one of the hot political topics in the week’s news broadcasts, where The Commentator very insistently asks.
The politician answers.
In some broadcasts it is really the mentioned politician, in others it is an actor imitating the voice of the politician. If it is an actor you should make sure that the politician goes along with it.
The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to guess whether it is the politician’s real voice or a false voice they heard during the telephone conversation and are encouraged to choose the “yes” or “no” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces the right answer. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The “Home Service” Sequence
Interview comments on the week´s publicly known events are sent from permanent broadband transmitters or the like, with the same people who are familiar to the viewers in ordinary environments e.g. a garage or a kitchen. The persons answer questions from The Anchor on the week’s publicly known events in front of the camera in the middle of their daily errands.
The Anchor asks whether the viewers agree to a statement, which the interviewee has put forward, as the Anchor repeats the statement.
The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to choose the “yes” or “no” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence The Anchor announces the percentage which was for or against the view and whether the ones choosing “yes” or “no” thus, having the right answer. The highest percentage is the right answer. The response server calculates the percentage. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The “What is it about” Sequence
A video is shown containing the answers in an interview, which has been shown in a news broadcast on the TV channel. The viewers get the opportunity of choosing between a correct and a wrong answer to which topic the interviewee on the video is commenting on. The video, which is approximately 20 seconds, is shown twice. Prior to each display The Anchor suggests which topic the interviewee on the video is commenting on. One suggestion is false, the other true. After the last display The Anchor encourages the viewers to choose the “one” or “two” item or button on the screen, as the true version by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar. After the next sequence the Anchor announces the right answer. The right answer gives 5 rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day”.
The Last Sequence of the Game is: The “Predict the News” Sequence
A brief video is shown of an event, which is to take place in the near future. E.g. the same evening or the following week. The event is to end up in a result.
The viewers are to guess the result. The Anchor mentions two result possibilities and encourages the viewers to choose the “one” or “two” item or button on the screen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar.
The result may e.g. be who gets the most votes at an election to a political assembly, acquittal or a conviction in a criminal case or whether a nominated artist will win an award or not.
In the next “Profit by the News” broadcast The Anchor mentions the result and the viewers who chose right will earn double the relevant rates of discount or double the relevant “The Amount of the Day”. There may be a new “Advertiser” in this broadcast.
“The Chosen Person of the Day”
A chosen viewer who has earned a considerable number of rates of discount or “The Amounts of the Day” in a previous “Profit by the News” broadcast participates on a screen behind The Anchor or behind a special desk in the studio and participates in guessing the questions of the day. The choices of “The Chosen Person of the Day” motivates the viewers to also choose during the different sequences.
The “chosen Person of the Day” is interviewed in a sequence in the beginning of the broadcast in his usual surroundings e.g. a garage or a hotel reception, on what goods or services the person in questions wants to buy for the rates of discount or “The Amounts of the Day” which the person might earn in the relevant broadcast.
“The Chosen Person of the Day” earns thrice the rates of discount or thrice “The Amount of the Day” for a right answer so the person can earn enough to get a piece of good or service, which is provided during the “Profit by the News” broadcast, free of charge. The screen or the desk with “The Chosen Person of the Day” is equipped with a display for the amount of earned rates of discount or the amount of earned “Amounts of the Day” by "The Chosen Person of the Day."
“The Stand In”
A person who is affected by an accident without personal injury who has been mentioned in a news broadcast on the TV channel, e.g. that the house is burnt or that the person in question has lost the value of his savings in shares, is interviewed, and is offered the opportunity to win one of the goods or services for which purchase rates of discount or discount amounts can be earned in the relevant broadcast. The person in question accepts the offer and “The Stand In” of the broadcast, who is to be a known, ready-witted and knowledgeable person, chooses on behalf of the interviewee and takes his place beside The Anchor and The Commentator behind the desk where “The Chosen Person of the Day” is sitting, if any, in other “Profit by the News” broadcasts. “The Stand In” earns thrice the rates of discount or thrice “The Amount of the Day” for a right answer on behalf of the accident-struck interviewed viewer.
Awarding of Prizes to the TV Viewers
When a viewer chooses correctly the viewer earns 5 rates of discount (percentage points) in relation to the advertising price of the advertised piece of good or service.
Instead of rates of discount for a correct choice the prize may be “The Amount of the Day” (a discount amount) for each correct choice. “The Amount of the Day” can be e.g. 10 dollars for each correct choice.
When the “Profit by the News” broadcast is over many viewers will be disappointed if they do not make use of the total of earned rates of discount or the total of earned discount amount (the total of earned “Amounts of the Day”) to purchase for.
When the viewer has chosen by means of a remote control, a phone, a mouse, touch technology or similar, it is registered on the response server used by the TV channel and just after The Anchor has announced the right answer a video is shown a in a brief Picture in Picture in a corner of the screen with two hands reaching out, into which coins are falling. Then, a puzzle is shown where the fields for the pieces have been marked by outline and have been filled in with the number of pieces that the viewer has earned by correct choices at the time. The fields, which are filled in, show parts of “The Advertisers” trademark or a picture or a name for the piece of good or service to which rates of discount or discount amounts can be earned. At the same time, with a transparent number across the puzzle plate, the sum total of the rates of discount or the sum total of amounts of discount (“The Amounts of the Day”), which the viewer at the time has earned, is shown. The number of puzzle pieces corresponds relative to the total rates of discount or the total amounts of discount in relation to maximum, which the viewer at the time has earned.
Gradually, as the viewer makes more right choices more puzzle pieces fall in place in the Picture in Picture, and the transparent figure grows. When all puzzle pieces are in place the right for the viewer to buy a piece of good or service with use of maximum rates of discount or discount amount has been achieved.
At any time during the broadcast when the viewer by means of a remote control, a mouse, touch technology or similar activates an item (overlay) or button on the screen marked “Profit”, the viewer in a brief Picture in Picture can see how many rates of discount or the amount of discount (the sum total of "Amounts of the Day") the viewer in question has currently earned, by the puzzle plate with the currently earned number of puzzle pieces being shown with the transparent figure across the puzzle plate.
The Viewers’ Use of the total Earned Rate of Discount or the total Earned Amount of Discount for Purchase of “The Advertisers” Goods or Services
The total rate of discount or the sum total of “Amounts of the Day”, which has been earned by the viewer, can be used for the viewer’s purchase of the pre-advertised specific goods or services with “The Advertiser,” e.g. certain car models, certain electric equipment, certain holidays, first deposit on a pension scheme, deposit on account for gambling with book-maker, purchase of certain DVDs, first subscription payment on health insurance, purchase of certain securities etc.
At the end of the broadcast the puzzle is shown in the size of the entire screen with the viewer’s earned number of puzzle pieces, and with the transparent number with the viewer’s total earned rate of discount or the viewer’s total earned discount amount (“Amounts of the Day”), which range from 0 to the maximum. At the same time a voice encourages the viewers not to let the chance go of making a good purchase or making a good investment.
The viewers can purchase “The Advertisers” goods or services with the inclusion of the earned rates of discount or the earned discount amount, by phone or by means of a selection box and a remote control, a mouse, touch technology or similar, by choosing different “Yes I buy” items (overlays) or buttons on the screen when, the prior to the “Profit by the News” broadcast in commercial breaks advertised goods or services from “The Advertiser,” are shown again in a commercial break right after the end of the “Profit by the News” broadcast.
There may also be a possibility to, through e-commerce on the Internet (The Advertisers Internet site) or television home shopping or phone shopping, subsequently after the broadcast, to order goods or services with the use of the earned rates of discount or the earned discount amount with statements in a textbox or display of specific wishes, credit card information, telephone number, Internet address, identification code-number if any etc.
A certificate, if any can be issued for the earned rates of discount or discount amounts so that the viewers may subsequently make use of the earned rate of discount or the earned discount amount on purchases with “The Advertiser.”
The prize certificate, if so, is sent by e-mail for print or by ordinary mail to the viewers.
The viewers may, if any, save the earned rates of discount or the discount amounts for the next “Profit by the News” broadcast and thereby accumulate more rates of discount or discount amounts, if the next “Profit by the News” broadcast has the same “Advertiser”. Thereby, motivation for watching more “Profit by the News” broadcasts and commercial features from “The Advertiser” increases, and for buying “The Advertisers” products.
Items (overlays) or buttons with “The Advertisers” Trademark
During the TV broadcast, items have been laid with “The Advertisers” trademark on top of recordings on location so that they, from a superficial point of view, are a part of the environment on location e.g. in the “On location” sequence or in the “Home Service” sequence or in the “Voice Over” sequence or during the interview of “The Chosen Person of the Day”. The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to be aware of these items (overlays) or buttons and select these items or buttons by means of a remote control and press “OK” or “+” or by means of a mouse, touch technology or similar. Five rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day” are earned, when such an item or button is chosen (found).
On the big screen with changeable background behind the Anchor changing still pictures are shown, where items or buttons with “The Advertisers” trademark appear on some of them. These may hide as commercials in an airport, on a taxi, hoarding surrounding a sports arena, or as an advertisement on the roadside. The viewers are encouraged by The Anchor to be aware of these items or buttons and select these items or buttons by means of a remote control and press “OK” or “+” or by means of a mouse, touch technology or similar. Five rates of discount or “The Amount of the Day” are earned, when such an item (overlay) or button is chosen (found).
Marketing of the “Profit by the News” Broadcasts
The broadcast and the goods and services sold by “The Advertiser” are marketed in commercial features on the TV channel before the day of the “Profit by the News” broadcast, and in a commercial break immediately before this. During these commercial features the relevant goods or services are mentioned for the purchase of which can be earned rates of discount or discount amounts during the show. A puzzle is shown on the screen, where the pieces to the puzzle plate, piece by piece, are filled in with the trademark or a picture or a name for the piece of good or service, to which rates of discount or discount amounts can be earned, and a transparent indication across the puzzle plate of a rates of discount or a discount amounts growing in the same pace as the puzzle pieces fall in place.
When is “Profit by the News” Broadcasted and for Whom?
The format is best suited to earn rates of discount or discount amounts for expensive impulse buying, where the household is typically to agree on buying the piece of good or service.
The broadcast is thus intended broadcasted Saturday and Sunday during the daytime and the contents is to relate to news brought in news broadcasts, approximately 2-5 days prior to the “Profit by the News” broadcast on the same TV channel.
Securing of the Viewers for the Broadcast which is transmitted right after the “Profit by the News” Broadcast
In order to secure the viewers on the TV channel and to get them to buy more with “The Advertiser,” a commercial for “The Advertiser” in the “Profit by the News” broadcast is inserted in a commercial break in the subsequent broadcast, where the viewers by choosing an item or button marked “Last chance” can earn 5-15 extra rates of discount or up to trice “The Amount of the Day”, and add them to the rates of discount or discount amounts earned during the “Profit by the News” broadcast. It is not said in advance how many extra rates of discount or how many extra “The Amount of the Day” can be earned on the relevant day by making use of “Last chance”. Right after the possibility of choosing “Last chance”, the goods and services offered by “The Advertiser” in connection with the “Profit by the News” broadcast may again be bought with the use of the now earned, total rate of discount or total discount amount.
The Level of Difficulty for the Choices the Viewers are to Make and Maximum for the Rate of Discount or the Discount Amount, which the individual viewer may earn
The level of difficulty to what the viewers are to answer, shall vary during the broadcast so that all viewers are capable of earning some rates of discount or discount amounts, but at the same time so difficult that too many rates of discount or too many discount amounts cannot be earned by the individual viewer.
There should be a maximum for what a viewer can earn, e.g. 50 rates of discount or a discount amount corresponding to a 50 percent discount on the prices which have been stated in advance in a commercial on the goods or services offered by “The Advertiser” in the broadcast. This maximum shall apply even if, e.g. 80 rates of discount or a discount amount of 80 percent of the price could theoretically be earned during a broadcast.
There should be an agreement between the TV channel and “The Advertiser,” that “The Advertiser” shall bear the risk/advantage of the scope of earned and used rates of discount and discount amounts.
Technological Opportunities
The viewers are in contact with a response server and a response network which serve the TV channel and treat the replies and orders of the viewers, and send these on to “The Advertiser.”This interactive part of the broadcasts may be performed by use of several current and future technologies e.g.:
1. through a telephone modem in a set top box or TV set, or
2. through reply which is returned in the cable which supplies the viewer with the broadcaster’s original signal or satellite-broadcast signal or terrestrial broadcast signal or
3. through satellite, where the viewers both receive and transmit from their own parabolic screen so that the viewer’s response is sent back through the satellite or
4. through the Internet including WAP or
5. through a phone including a cell-phone by which the viewer chooses what to answer by dialling or
6. through a cell-phone where blue-tooth or similar technology is incorporated in the TV-set or in a set-top box and in the viewer’s cell phone, so that the viewer’s response is transmitted further by means of air-borne telephony or
7. through a cell-phone where blue-tooth or similar technology is incorporated in the viewers cell-phone and in the viewers remote control which has prior programmed buttons e.g. on "yes", "no", "one", "two", "three", "Yes I buy" corresponding to what the Anchor or a voice encourages viewers to press or choose during the broadcast. The radio of the remote control transmits to the viewer`s cell-phone, what the viewer has pressed e.g. "yes".
A remote control may be used to choose by its arrow keys, which causes an on-screen selection box to move to a highlighted item (overlay) on the TV screen, and thereby pressing the “OK” button or “+” button on the remote control. The TV-set or the set-top box transmits what the viewer has pressed.
